UFC 110 is coming up this week and I am worried about one thing. I am worried that the mixed martial arts might jump the shark and turn in the direction of professional wrestling. This Saturday night, we will get proof.
It is no secret that the UFC wants to be a global sport and continue to gain popularity in Europe. They have tried everything to make Michael Bisping into a superstar and it hasn’t worked. Partly because Bisping is an unlikeable asshole, but partly because he failed to beat anyone important.
They had a season of the ulitimate fighter with Bisping and the best the UK had to offer. They followed this up by promoting Bisping in UFC 100 against what they thought was a washed up American hero. This was an opportunity that many superior fighters never get because the UFC isn’t trying to gain fans in their homeland.
Well, it didn’t work. Dan Henderson proved two things in UFC 100. He proved that he wasn’t washed up and/or he proved that Bisping doesn’t belong on the national stage with real fighters. He outclassed and ultimately embarrassed the brit.
Fast forward to this Saturday night. The UFC has given Michael Bisping another huge stage to make a “comback” against a washed up MMA legend. Another opportunity that he hasn’t earned. An opportunity that many more deserving and far superior fighters will never get.
Bisping doesn’t belong in the same sentence with Wanderlei Silva, much less the same match. If Bisping get embarrassed again like he did in UFC 100, they should terminate his contract and let other fighters step in the spotlight. It would be the obvious thing to do, but it would seriously hurt any momentum for the worldwide fan base the UFC desires. I cant see how the UFC could continue to promote him and give him big fights if he loses again.
He is not an elite fighter, he doesn’t belong in that match, he shouldn’t win. But if he does, you have to start to question the integrity of the UFC.
Wanderlei should walk through him as easy as Dan Henderson did. However, maybe the smart money is on a Bisping win because the UFC needs him to win.
All we can do is wait on the evidence. I’m not buying the fight, so I’ll be following it on other blogs.
Note to UFC – If Henderson was fighting, I would buy the fight and probably a t-shirt or two.
Unanswered Questions:
Why does Bisping get this opportunity so soon after getting outclassed when the guy that beat him didn’t get another contract?
Why did the UFC and Dan Henderson’s relationship get rocky after he embarrassed Bisping? He had momentum, popularity and a brand new fan base with more disposable income than 10 euros put together. (People like me) Was he supposed to lose?
Either way, I will watching to see how Bisping wins, if he does, and/or how the UFC treats him if he loses.
